  • Inexperience and operator error: Operators must understand the basics of boating and rules of navigation. They must be prepared to handle emergency situations.
  • Excessive speed: It is critical to operate your boat at a safe speed. Always adjust your speed to the prevailing conditions on the the water.
  • Impaired operation: Alcohol or drugs can be a factor in boat accidents and this can result in serious injury or even death. Data shows that alcohol is a leading cause of boating accidents.

  • Lack of the proper safety gear: always wear a life jacket or at the very least keep it handy. Put it on in rough weather, during the night and in cold weather. Don’t leave port without all the required safety equipment on board.
