Towing a boat trailer
A trailered boat opens up possibilities to explore and experience more dams, rivers, lakes and waterways and to get the most out of boating.
When towing a boat the number one concern should always be your safety.
Towing a trailered boat is not difficult. Follow these basics tips and use the trailer checklist before every trip.
The tow vehicle
- Your vehicle should be serviced and in good order.
- Check the condition and the pressure of the vehicle tyres.
- Have the brakes and the handbrake inspected and serviced regularly.
- Do not overload the vehicle and/or trailer.
Trailer checklist
- The trailer must be roadworthy and licensed. Check that the license is displayed and current.
- Check the air pressure of the trailer tyres before every trip. Low air pressure can cause tyre damage and blow-outs.
- Check the tyre pressure and condition of the trailer spare wheel. Make sure you have a tyre spanner for the trailer wheels.
- Hitch the trailer coupling to the vehicle tow hitch. Use a safety chain between the trailer and the tow hitch. Regularly check the coupling when travelling long distances.
- Secure the trailer jockey wheel.
- Keep the wheel bearings properly lubricated. Wheel bearings should be inspected and serviced regularly.
- Check and test the trailer and tailboard lights every time you couple the trailer to your vehicle. Regularly check the trailer and tailboard on longer trips.
- Adjust your side view mirrors for a clear view of the trailer.
- Make sure the boat is secured to the trailer at both the bow eye and with tie-downs at the transom. If a boat cover is used make sure it is properly attached and tied down onto the boat and trailer.
- Ensure that the weight on the boat is evenly distributed.
- Do not overload the trailer by stowing extra gear in the boat.
- Secure all the loose items and hatch covers on the boat.
- For day trips make sure all the gear you will need for a day on the water is loaded and ready to go.
